I’m turning this into a little series to help you design your perfect website! Today, we’re covering how to do an About page design.
An About page is a web page that business owners know they need, but get stuck on the details. It can be hard to write about yourself and be engaging to the reader!
You don’t have to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Follow these tips to design the perfect About page for your website!
And if you missed the first installment of this series, read more about how to design the perfect Home page!
I think it’s generally understood that every website needs an About page. Besides helping your audience learn more about you and/or your business, what else is the purpose behind an About page?
This is your opportunity to connect with your audience.
You could do that by:
Your About page should help your audience get to know you better.
People get tripped up on About pages because they think it should be all about them, and it’s really hard to write about yourself!
Let me ease your fears – your About page isn’t really about you. It’s your chance to connect your story to what your audience is struggling with.
Use these elements to design your About page!
Pleeeeease do not make your About page headline ‘About (your name).’ How boring!
Make the headline engaging and relevant to your audience.
For example, mine is: “My Desire For You: Be Proud and Confident to Send People to Your Website. And Bring More People There Than Ever Before.”
I’m speaking directly to my audience who is possibly feeling embarrassed by their website design, copy, or functionality.
This headline is saying that my services are the solution to their insecurity and business challenge.
Share where you’re at today, what you learned, and how you use your new knowledge to help them with the same thing.
Think about these questions:
Thinking through these questions can help you write a relevant story that resonates with your audience.
Your About page can also highlight your company’s mission and/or values. Again, this is a chance to connect with your audience!
Listing your values or what you look for in people you work with will naturally attract some people and repel others (that’s a good thing, by the way!)
Make your About page design fun! I already said that it shouldn’t read like a resume, and the same principle applies to the design!
Here are a few ways to make the page more fun:
Let your personality shine in your About page design!
Include a lot of brand photos in your About page design! YOU are who they’re going to work with.
Brand photos build trust and a human connection with your audience. Don’t forget – people connect with people!
At the end, invite them to explore what you can offer with a CTA. This will most likely direct people to your services page, but it could also lead to your contact page.
An About page design should also be mobile-friendly and SEO-optimized for the best results.
Mobile optimization is crucial for every website, as most searches are now done on mobile devices.
Your website should give the same experience, no matter how it’s accessed. Make sure your About page is legible and easy to navigate on mobile devices.
Your About page should be optimized like any other webpage. However, sometimes it’s hard to find a good keyword to go with your About page.
Like, am I going to use the keyword, “About Laurel”? Nope!
Try to find keywords that align with the services you offer.
Here are some examples of SEO titles with a relevant keyword for an About page:
See what I mean? You can creatively incorporate keywords that describe the services you offer.
Do you feel more prepared to design and write your About page? Don’t overthink it. It’s just like any other page on your website – you’re building trust with your audience and connecting with them over shared challenges. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that!
This copy template will give you the perfect starting point for writing your About page. And I’m ready when you are for your About page to be designed! A quick discovery call is just a click away.
Include who you are, what you do, who you do it for, your story and values, something relatable, and a call to action.
The biggest mistake I see is in the copy. This is not a ‘copy and paste from LinkedIn’ situation. This is not your resume. It’s an opportunity to build trust with your audience.
Don’t treat your bio like a resume. Use it to include your humor and personality.
Here are two examples – you tell me which one you like better:
Do you see how the second one adds personality and relates to people? Your bio has information about you, but also about them.
Some links across my website may be affiliate links, meaning I receive a portion of any sales made through them. I never recommend any product or service that I don't wholeheartedly believe in and use in my own business.
