Pinterest is a powerful marketing platform that I feel a lot of creative entrepreneurs don’t take advantage of. Maybe because they don’t understand the platform’s potential or don’t have the time to do it themselves… However, the right strategy can drive a lot of traffic to your website. And to create an effective strategy, you need a few Pinterest SEO tools in your back pocket. I have a few favorites to help me create and manage Pinterest SEO strategies for my clients, and you get an inside look!
📌 PIN FOR LATER 📌
Pinterest is a search engine and just as you would optimize your website for Google, you need to optimize your Pinterest profile for search. By optimizing your profile, boards, and pins for SEO, you can increase your visibility and traffic from Pinterest. Actually, you can use similar strategies on Pinterest as you do for your website, including:
Pinterest is an effective marketing strategy for creatives. Unlike other social media platforms, pins can appear in search results for years after the original post date. This makes Pinterest great for evergreen content like blogs, freebies, and core services or products.
I may be a little biased, but I think every creative entrepreneur can benefit from a Pinterest strategy!
Before you start publishing pins, it’s important to solidify your SEO for Pinterest strategy. These are the best Pinterest SEO tools I’ve found. I use them every day for client work and my own Pinterest strategy!
It sounds simple, but the Pinterest search bar can be a great place to start your keyword research. Start typing in a term related to your offerings, and a bunch of other keywords will populate, trying to guess your search. Those are some top keywords people search.
Here’s an example of a search I would do for my business:
Original search: web design
Pinterest search results:
I can create content around those ideas and use these words in my board titles, board descriptions, pin titles and pin descriptions to help them rank. I use a Google sheet to keep track of what I find using this (*ahem* completely free!) method of keyword research.
Pinterest Trends allows you to search for keywords that are trending on Pinterest. This is another free way to do keyword research on Pinterest. When you search a term, you can see the interest over time, related trends, demographics of searchers, and popular pins with that keyword.
If you just want to explore trends in general, you can filter by growing trends, top monthly or yearly trends, and seasonal trends. You’ll see weekly, monthly, and yearly changes in search frequency. Using Pinterest trends allows me to see what topics trend during what times of the year so I can get ahead on seasonal content. Remember – Pinterest takes a while to categorize your content, so if you’re creating or repurposing seasonal content, start pinning it 2-3 months in advance to see the best return!
Whichever way you choose to use this Pinterest SEO tool, it can give you great insight into popular topics on Pinterest.
You can use the Pinterest ads tool to conduct research on keywords, trends, and audience interests without actually paying for ads. In Ad Account Overview, start the process of creating an ad campaign, but don’t publish it. You’ll see the keyword research tool, audience insights, and competitor activity. You’ll also be able to see which keywords have the highest volume. This will let you know which keywords are more popular and which ones are a little more niched.
This information can help you improve the visibility of your content in Pinterest’s search results. Use it to develop a Pinterest SEO strategy, write pin or board descriptions, or brainstorm content ideas.
Pin Inspector is another way to discover trending searches, top-converting content, and the best-performing pins and boards on Pinterest. It has a ton of information; sometimes it’s a little overwhelming! I love using it to find popular keywords. This is the more automated version of using the Pinterest search bar for keyword research and will save you a lot of time weeding through the Pinterest search bar.
It quickly generates hundreds of keywords from Pinterest and gives you in-depth analytics for each one, including:
You’ll never run out of keyword or topic ideas with this tool!
Tailwind is my preferred tool for scheduling pins. It recommends optimal times to post throughout the day and how often to publish a new pin. Tailwind analyzes your performance and updates these recommendations based on how well your content performs. Of course, you can customize the days and times you want to publish new pins. Tailwind makes it easy to batch create pins with optimized pin titles and descriptions.
Once you’ve done your keyword research, use specific keywords in your board and pin titles and descriptions. Remember, keywords are how Pinterest determines which pins to show in specific searches. Using diverse and relevant keywords will improve the chances of your pins appearing in search results (AKA – getting more traffic to your website!)
Another tip is to pin consistently. Regular activity shows the Pinterest algorithm that you’re providing new content. Fresh pins don’t have to be completely new; they can be variations of existing content. You can update the pin title, description, or image, which is a great way to make the most of your content. I use Notion to plan Pinterest content for myself and clients.
Don’t forget to change your pin graphic file names to a keyword before uploading! It’s just another way for Pinterest to analyze and rank your pins in search results.
