Strategy (n) A plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim”. – Oxford Dictionary. A Pinterest strategy (like any strategy) is crafted based on the end goal. Think about what result you want from bringing in traffic from Pinterest, then work backward. Ask yourself: How do I create an experience both on and off Pinterest that will make my ideal client want to take the action I want them to take?
Are you hoping to:
Write down these goals before moving on to the next step!
You’re not going to see any conversion from your Pinterest marketing strategy if you don’t have a client or customer journey. The customer journey, or “funnel”, is how you gain your ideal client or customer’s trust and nurture them! Give them resources like educational blog posts, free downloadable guides, and more to provide value and build trust. Provide a way to stay in the loop with you by joining your email list or following you on social media.
Map out a journey for your client. After they find you on Pinterest, what other steps are you taking to nurture them? An example would be: Client clicks on your pin > They download your free resources from an opt-in page or linked blog post > They receive a welcome sequence > They are added to your weekly newsletter list. Now that they are on your email list, you have direct access to them. You can continue to build trust until they decide to work with you in some capacity. That could be purchasing a low-ticket offer or working with you 1:1!
I highly recommend using an email provider like Flodesk that allows you to segment your email list and create workflows to automate your sequences! Check out this article for more on how to automate a welcome sequence!
Since Pinterest is a search engine, it’s vital when creating your Pinterest marketing strategy that you find out what words your customer is searching for. What words are they typing in when they want to find your blog posts, products, or services? Think outside the box.
Brain dump all these words and then use the Pinterest platform to start searching these words and find other similar search terms. Use these words in your profile, boards, and pin descriptions. Check out this video on how to research your keywords directly on the Pinterest platform:
After diving into what your ideal client is searching for, start creating content they’ll love. These are great places to start:
Then create beautiful pins that they’ll want to click on so they can learn more about what you have to offer! These pins can highlight your post or resource, a plain image with no text (best for photographers and wedding pros!), a quote pulled from your podcast or blog, or an infographic containing a helpful diagram or checklist that your ideal audience will want to save for later. Check out this post to learn more about what makes a click-worthy pin!
The next part of this is to stay consistent with your publishing schedule. Consistency on Pinterest improves your engagement and reach. Use Tailwind or the Pinterest native scheduler to schedule pin out in advance.
As a search engine, Pinterest has SEO capabilities. It’s important to add keywords to Pinterest to help the algorithm understand the context of your pins. These are some of my favorite Pinterest SEO tools to help me perform keyword research! Once you have some good keywords picked out, add them naturally in your profile and pin and board titles and descriptions. This will help you reach even more of your target audience on Pinterest.
It’s not a Pinterest strategy without analytics to help you understand what’s working! The Pinterest analytics are very robust and provide a lot of good metrics. I track impressions, saves, engagement, total and engaged audiences, and outbound clicks (these are the most important!). These metrics help to inform what types of blog posts, pin designs and keywords to focus on for the next month. Use analytics to help you develop and improve your Pinterest strategy.
